PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES
Both the VW T5 and all variants of the VW T6 (Transporter, Caravelle, Multivan and California) are susceptible to engine failure. Diesel models with high mileage or intensive use are particularly vulnerable. The most common problems are related to the turbocharger, the exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR) and the injection system. Proper maintenance and responsible use are key to minimising risks.
The main cause of VW T5 and T6 2.0 TDI engine failures, which typically occur between 80,000 and 150,000 km, is an overload of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. This is due to design flaws and Volkswagen software updates that intensify the operation of the EGR valve, leading to premature wear, charring and failure of key components such as the valve itself, the recirculation flaps and the intake manifold.
The most common symptoms preceding an engine failure in the VW T5 and T6 are related to the EGR system. These include a noticeable loss of power and jerking when accelerating, activation of the vehicle’s emergency mode (limiting speed), increased fuel consumption, emission of black or blue smoke from the exhaust and irregular engine operation with unusual noises such as hissing or knocking.
To prevent breakdowns in the 2.0 TDI engines of the VW T5 and T6, regular cleaning or replacement of the EGR valve (every 30,000-50,000 km) is recommended to prevent clogging of the system. It is also important to use high quality engine oil (VW 507.00) and change it every 15,000 km, to avoid driving at low revs and short journeys, and to carry out regular inspections of the intake manifold and recirculation flaps.
The engines most affected include the VW T5 with engine code CFCA and the diesel engines of the VW T6, in particular the 2.0 TDI and Bi-TDI engines with engine code CXEB. On the T6, the most problematic power ratings are 204 hp (150 kW), 199 hp (146 kW), 150 hp (110 kW) and 114 hp (84 kW). Owners of vehicles with these engines may be entitled to claim compensation from Volkswagen for repair or replacement costs.
In the event of a breakdown, it is crucial to keep damaged parts as evidence and to keep a full maintenance history, even if it has been carried out by independent workshops. Repairs should not be rushed and it is advisable to compare quotes. It is also important to check whether you have legal protection insurance and consider hiring a specialist lawyer, as Volkswagen has been shown to be more willing to negotiate in such cases.
The legal situation is favourable for owners of both VW T5 (engine code CFCA) and VW T6 (especially those built between 2015 and 2019 with engine code CXEB) with engine failures, as the problems are attributed to design defects in the EGR system. Those affected can claim up to 80% of the repair or replacement costs, which can range from €15,000 to €22,000. Even in older vehicles, it is possible to obtain goodwill remedies from Volkswagen, covering up to 75% of the costs.
